The time has come, I hate to say
To put the summer clothes away
I've finally gotten it through my head
That all of my pretending
Won't stop warm weather ending
Now shorts and t-shirts go under the bed!
Or here's another version.
The time has come, I hate to say
To put the summer clothes away
The only reason it went quite this far
Was to keep me from admitting
That I will no more be sitting
On the beach for long, except in my car!

Hot dogs!
The first grade classroom got the bug
To get a brand new reading rug
So they decided they'd like to see
If basketball watchers would be in the mood
To give them some money in exchange for food
Hot dogs and chili? Dinner for me!
I'm not sure whether the hot dog and bake sale raised enough money for the reading rug or not, but I'll find out and post an update here. As a person who reads to the first graders and sometimes sits on their reading rug, I'd like to throw out a big THANKS to everyone who supported them today!
UPDATE: not only did they raise enough to buy the reading rug, they had enough left over to donate to the school/PTA general fund!

True story
Shampoo spilled in the shower
Over the course of 24 hours
Will create a puddle slick as glass
Then, when you step in there
Planning to wash your hair
You'll surely slip and fall upon your ______
Like on NPR's hilarious weekly news quiz "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me", I'll let you fill in the final word.
Yes, this actually happened to me, a few days ago, and I have the bruises to prove it. No, photos of said bruises will NOT be posted here (or anywhere else for that matter).

Birthday ditty
The really great thing about turning one
(Besides all the presents and party fun)
Is that no one laughs at you
Or says that you made a mistake
If you cover your face with cake
In fact, they expect you to!
Happy First Birthday Griffin! (who, incidentally, did not cover his face with cake at his party this afternoon)

The second
Not much to celebrate on the second
The year's begun, I reckon
We will see how this new decade goes
There's been some conversation
About what to call the last one
I vote that we call it the "uh-oh"s
Okay, so yeah, you have to pronounce it "conver-say-shun" to make it rhyme, but whatever... And no, that's not a typo. I think with all the challenges of this past decade, the "uh oh"s seems really appropriate.
What do you think we should call the last decade? The oughts? The zeroes? The two-thousands? The 0-0s (pronounced oh-ohs)? Or maybe you're thinking "who cares? It's over", and that's a perfectly valid position, too.
Whatever you call it, the old decade is past and the new one just beginning. Well, unless you realize that 2010 is actually the last year of the current decade, in which case we have another year to go. Either way, let's make 2010 a good one.

New Year's
To all of you feeling the pain of New Year's Eve on New Year's morning...
He who over imbibes
May have to hear some diatribes
From people who don't like to see him smashed
Or he may be lucky
And merely have the yucky
Experience of throwing up the hash
